Company merges 4G and satellites to bring reliable communications to the outback

ABC • February 16, 2017

Mobile service provider Pivotel Group is building custom-designed mobile network bases using 4G and satellite connectivity for use on pastoral stations, mine sites and oil and gas projects.

Called the ecoSphere, it offers secure point-to-point voice, video, tracking and monitoring connections.

Key points:

  • Pivotel Group builds custom-designed mobile network bases using 4G and satellite connectivity
  • System could provide an alternative to landline phones
Provides complete communications for pastoral stations, mine sites, and oil and gas projects
  • Remote communications have been a bugbear for rural communities and industries that often struggle just to get enough connection to send or receive a mobile phone call.

Despite the launch of the Federal Government’s Sky Muster satellite, communities also suffer from download speeds so slow they make normal business operations almost impossible.

Now they face the possibility of losing the only reliable communications systems many of them have, the landline phone.

The Productivity Commission has recommended the Federal Government save money by removing the current requirement to provide basic telephones, a move angrily received in the bush.

Pivotel chief executive Peter Bolger said providing a better alternative to landlines was one of the opportunities ecoSphere could provide.

Voice services part of new network

Typically, the Universal Service Obligation (the legislation on landlines) was for voice services only.

“But voice services absolutely run over the network we’ve developed, which incorporates 4G networks,” Mr Bolger said.

“4G networks are designed for much higher speed anyway, so it’s a very simple service to run voice with that.”

Many rural and remote areas are the home of farms, pastoral stations and mining companies that have become so frustrated with the communications systems on offer they have been jerry-rigging their own systems.

The vexed issue of internet speed, mobile phones and loss of landlines may be addressed with new trial.

Making remote communications work

Mr Bolger said marrying the 4G network with custom-built base stations meant high-speed ability for a large number of applications.

“It provides complete communications, particularly around machine to machine, such as on mine sites and other remote industrial sites, but there is also a lot of voice and video applications that will be picked up as well,” he said.

“Prior to launch of 4G, the mobile phone networks were built up around voice services first.

“With the emergence of 4G, it’s built around data first, so voice goes over the top of the data network very easily.

“And in development is another standard piece that supports very, very low power and also have very long life batteries.

“That’s best for sensors, so the machine to machine [data] business that’s coming about.”

Role for NBN

Another service that has yet to live up to its promise, particularly for the rural sector, is the National Broadband Network (NBN).

However, Mr Bolger said the NBN was also an enabler of the system, as much as a dedicated satellite.

“The NBN entitles all farm owners, all properties, who have NBN connection to the home,” he said

“But that doesn’t provide mobile phone coverage on their properties; their workplace is out on the farm, not necessarily in their homes.

“So we use that NBN to connect to the mobile base stations [purpose-built on properties], which will provide complete coverage at high speed.

“But it’s also for low speed, low power if for example you want to carry out simple tasks like monitoring water levels or soil quality.”

Communications systems in modern agriculture

Farmers and pastoralists have been using telemetry for some time, being able to open and close gates, measure water and other comparatively simple tasks.

“A lot of it has been happening around UHF [shortwave radios] and it’s very specific,” Mr Bolger said.

“We’re talking about bringing high speed voice, video, data, onto a single terminal where your iPad and mobile phone will work.”

Mr Bolger said asset optimisation was a big aim.

“I see in the future every single piece of livestock — cattle or sheep or goats — could potentially be tracked, and their own biometric conditions monitored so that you can say, maximise growth rate, minimise animal loss through theft, death and poor feed.

“Cattle farmers spend a very large amount of time simply going around making sure they’ve got decent water, decent food supply and they need to do it regularly.

“That is incredibly time consuming and it could be done via this system with simple monitoring and video cameras.”

Saladax Licenses Alzheimer’s Diagnostic Tests to Siemens Healthineers

Yahoo Finance • January 18, 2017

Saladax Biomedical, Inc., a privately held company focused on precision in-vitro diagnostic tests, announced today that it has signed an agreement to license diagnostic tests for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) to Siemens Healthineers. Saladax’s tests identify the amyloid beta 1-42 and tau biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which are known and accepted biomarkers for AD.

Alzheimer’s Disease is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., affecting nearly 50 million patients worldwide, with 10 million new cases each year. Presently, no disease-modifying therapeutics exist, and the available drugs provide limited alleviation of symptoms. The use of tests to identify CSF biomarkers much sooner than previously available, will give clinicians the ability to more accurately identify AD and begin treatment sooner. Early detection of AD is also an important step in better understanding the disease.

The two biomarkers have been extensively studied for over 20 years, and are key indicators of the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, evidence of early AD can only be determined by PET (positron emission tomography) imaging equipment such as can be found with Siemen’s PETNET Solutions, or biomarkers such as Saladax’s amyloid beta 1-42 and tau tests.

“We are very excited to be working with Siemens Healthineers to bring these important assays to the market,” said Sal Salamone, Ph.D., CEO of Saladax Biomedical, Inc. “Siemens is an ideal partner with a strong global position and high quality instrumentation.”

Under this non-exclusive agreement, Saladax will provide its proprietary raw materials, protocols, and intellectual property and Siemens will be responsible for the commercialization of both assays.

About Saladax Biomedical, Inc.

Saladax Biomedical is a leader in the development and deployment of high-quality diagnostic services and products to help physicians select and optimize the use of current and new pharmaceutical products, to improve treatment and positively impact the economics of care… because no two patients are alike.

Headquartered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Saladax was founded in 2004 and is ISO 13485:2003 certified. For more information visit: www.saladax.com.

Business Wire

 • November 9, 2016

GTT Communications, Inc. (NYSE:GTT), the leading global cloud networking
provider to multinational clients, announced today a definitive agreement to
acquire Hibernia Networks, a leading provider of global, high-speed network
connectivity solutions and owner of terrestrial and subsea fiber assets
including Hibernia Express, the lowest latency transatlantic cable system.

The
$590 million transaction consists of $515 million in cash and approximately
3.3 million shares of GTT common stock, to be issued to the sellers at
 closing, valued at $75 million.

This strategic combination:

  • Adds breadth and depth to GTT’s global Tier 1 IP network with owned and
leased dark fiber assets including five owned subsea cables and eight
 cable landing stations
  • Expands GTT’s cloud networking portfolio, composed of wide area
networking, internet, managed services and voice services, with the
addition of optical and low latency transport, video and CDN services
  • Adds a world-class video transport platform servicing content rights
holders, broadcasters, cable companies and OTT providers
  • Grows GTT’s client base, adding marquee clients with depth in the
financial services, media and entertainment, web-centric and service
provider segments, which will remain strategic verticals of focus for
 GTT
  • Enhances GTT’s financial profile by adding a substantial, highly
complementary recurring revenue business with strong cash flow
 characteristics

“This acquisition accelerates GTT’s growth strategy by expanding our
portfolio of cloud networking services, significantly increasing the scope
and power of our global network, and growing our multinational client base,”
said Rick Calder, GTT president and CEO. “Hibernia Networks has a
demonstrated track record of growth, and brings unique, strategic network
assets featuring high-bandwidth, low latency connectivity. We are very
excited to welcome Hibernia Networks’ clients and talented team members to
GTT. Following our successful, proven acquisition template, we expect to
complete integration within two to three quarters post-close, and to achieve
a post-synergy multiple of seven times Adjusted EBITDA or better on a pro
forma basis.”

“GTT’s acquisition of Hibernia Networks provides great benefit to the
entirety of our customer base as well as our two organizations,” said Bjarni
Thorvardarson, Hibernia Networks’ chief executive officer. “GTT gains world
class global fiber assets, including ultra-low latency routes between key
financial markets, as well as optical, low latency and content services, and
exceptional employees with a proven track record of network and commercial
leadership, and exemplary customer service. Hibernia Networks clients around
the world will benefit from the expansive reach of GTT’s Tier 1 IP network,
the broader portfolio of products and services, improved scale, and the
company’s expertise in delivering cloud networking solutions and managed
 services to multinational clients.”

The parties expect to close the transaction by the end of first quarter
2017, subject to certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing
 conditions.

The Bank Street Group LLC served as exclusive financial advisor to Hibernia
in connection with this transaction.

Transaction Financing

Under the terms of the agreement, the purchase price is $590 million,
subject to customary adjustments for working capital and other items,
composed of $515 million in cash, plus approximately 3.3 million shares of
GTT common stock, to be issued to the sellers at closing, valued at $75
million. The cash portion of the purchase price will be funded with proceeds
from additional debt issuance, consisting of secured term loans as well as
 senior unsecured notes.

The debt syndication process will be led by KeyBank National Association and
Credit Suisse, who provided committed financing for the transaction.

At closing, the ratio of total net debt to Adjusted EBITDA is expected to be
approximately 4.5:1, using annualized pro forma combined third quarter 2016
Adjusted EBITDA plus expected cost synergies. Within one year after closing,
the ratio of total net debt to Adjusted EBITDA is expected to be at or below
4.0:1, reflecting continued Adjusted EBITDA growth and cash generation.

Hibernia Financial Information

For the three months ending September 30, 2016, Hibernia reported, on an
unaudited basis, revenue of $45.5 million, Adjusted EBITDA of $16.1 million
and capital expenditures of $1.9 million. For the nine months ending
September 30, 2016, Hibernia reported, on an unaudited basis, revenue of
$138.6 million, Adjusted EBITDA of $49.1 million and capital expenditures of
$12.7 million. In 2015, Hibernia reported revenue of $148.9 million,
Adjusted EBITDA of $34.2 million and capital expenditures of $161.5 million.
Revenue and Adjusted EBITDA growth from 2015 to 2016 is primarily driven by
completion of the Hibernia Express low latency transatlantic cable system in
September 2015, including the impact of certain prepayments for long-term
indefeasible rights of use (“IRUs”) from anchor tenants. The results listed
above are as reported by Hibernia Networks, without expected future cost
synergies, and without any pro forma adjustments. Detailed Hibernia results
and pro forma information will be made available in a Form 8-K within the
 next several weeks.

PocketiNet Communications connects 100th customer to Fiber-to-the-Home internet in Walla Walla, Washington

Walla Walla, WA • November 4, 2016

One hundred is a significant number. A little child feels accomplished when she learns to count to one hundred on her own. More impressively, when a person reaches the age of one hundred we all see it as an important milestone. PocketiNet Communications, based in Walla Walla, Washington has reached a momentous event of their own. Recently, they connected their one hundredth customer to their new Gigabit Fiber-to-the-Home network known as Gigabit Country.

Who was the lucky number one hundred? Jim Wright, owner of Tesla Winery Tours in Walla Walla, WA. Jim waited patiently for nearly five months for Fiber to reach his home. That pales in comparison to the eighteen months he waited to take delivery of his beautiful Tesla Model X 90D.

PocketiNet

Aaron Shiffler (l), PocketiNet’s Director of Fiberhood Sales presents
Jim Wright (r), owner of Tesla Winery Tours and PocketiNet’s 100th
Fiber-to-the-Home customer, with a new Amazon Echo Dot.

About five years ago, Jim, a Federal Marshal, began making solid plans to retire. Everything was in place except the location. Gig Harbor, WA was high on the list but Jim started seeing article after article in national publications about a great little town in eastern Washington named, Walla Walla. So, Jim and his wife visited to see if all the hype was true. It was. After several annual visits they retired and moved to Walla Walla hoping to add to the town’s friendliness.

As Jim was preparing to retire, he knew he wouldn’t want to sit around after retirement, so he developed a plan to launch Tesla Winery Tours. Even before moving to Walla Walla he ordered his Tesla and waited. It’s a decision he hasn’t regretted.

If you talk with Jim, it’s obvious he likes technology. That affinity for tech made both Tesla and PocketiNet logical products to meet his needs. After all, both Tesla and Gigabit Country Fiber are fast! Tesla vehicles come with software letting a driver choose their preferred performance output. Settings range from Standard to Ludicrous (that’s actually what Tesla calls it). PocketiNet’s Gigabit Country Fiber also comes with customer performance options. Internet packages range from 100Mbps up to the ludicrous 1Gbps. Not only is Gigabit Country fast, it’s incredibly reliable.

Jim enjoys meeting new people and loves talking about his Tesla. He is a believer. He’s a Tesla believer, a Walla Walla believer and a PocketiNet believer.

As their one hundredth Fiber customer, PocketiNet presented Jim with an Amazon Echo Dot. Because, in the end, a man who likes technology enough to wait a year and a half for a Tesla and another five months for the fastest Internet connection in town, should be able to voice command his car out of the garage. Want to see how Amazon Echo and Tesla integrate, when you have the best Internet available? Check out this video on YouTube.

Biotech company founder Sal Salamone honored as one of New Jersey’s top inventors

The Morning Call • November 2, 2016

The co-founder of a Bethlehem biomedical company can claim to be linked with Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and countless other great innovators with ties to the Garden State.

Sal Salamone, CEO and president of Bethlehem-based Saladax Biomedical Inc., has been inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame. His award, for “luminary discoveries,” covers the following fields: oncology research, therapeutic diagnostics, health care and medical device services.

Salamone’s company makes a test to gauge the level of chemotherapy drugs in bloodstreams. The drug gauge addresses the issue of cancer patients absorbing pharmaceuticals at different rates.

“We will not fully achieve the promise of personalized medicine until we also ensure patients are receiving the correct amount of drug for their body,” Salamone said in a statement. “This is my life’s work and I am deeply honored to be recognized for it.”

Salamone, who grew up in central New Jersey, has more than 30 years of experience developing diagnostics, and has earned more than 140 U.S. or foreign patents. The Bethlehem resident worked nearly three decades for Roche Diagnostics before becoming senior vice president of research and development for OraSure Technologies Inc. in 2001.

Three years later, he co-founded Saladax Biomedical, which is based at Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeast Pennsylvania’s TechVentures building on Lehigh University’s Mountaintop campus.

Salamone joined nearly three dozen winners who were honored Oct. 27 during an awards banquet in Hoboken, N.J. The event honors inventors who hail from the Garden State, from graduate students beginning their careers to veteran innovators.

PocketiNet Communications finds support in local residents who help spread the word about Fiber-to-the-Home

Walla Walla, WA • October 17, 2016

Even though it seems like ancient digital history, about a year ago the “Be Like Bill” meme went viral. If you’re unfamiliar, the meme consisted of a black and white drawing of a stick figure sitting at a computer desk. The caption would extol readers of Bill’s virtues and then spur readers to action with a final phrase, “Be like Bill.” As with most viral meme’s it had fifteen minutes of fame and quietly disappeared. Today, I’d like to revitalize the meme but this time title it, “Be like Zach.”

Pictured below, you see Zach and Wrandoll. Zach lives in a relatively new neighborhood in College Place, WA. One day, not long ago, Zach heard via word of mouth about PocketiNet’s Gigabit Country Fiber-to-the-home initiative. Wanting to know more, he reached out to PocketiNet asking if there was anything he could do to promote Gigabit Country in his neighborhood? The answer from PocketiNet, “Of course!”

PocketiNet

Pictured l to r: Zach Hafen and Wrandoll Brenes. Wrandoll is PocketiNet’s
OSP Director. They are seated in PocketiNet’s Gigabit Country Experience
Center located upstairs at the Walla Walla Regional Airport.

PocketiNet is currently deploying Gigabit Country Fiber in the Walla Walla Valley and the greater Tri-Cities area. PocketiNet has been providing commercial Fiber to these areas for over 10 years but residential Fiber has been too expensive to for most homes. All that changed about a year ago. With several large Internet Service Providers now deploying residential Fiber in urban areas across the nation PocketiNet, a local company, decided to start the process in Walla Walla. Todd Brandenberg, PocketiNet’s president and founder says, “PocketiNet is committed to south-eastern Washington. We want to be the ones to serve our neighbors instead of waiting for a corporate giant to eventually get here.” He continues, “We’re from this area, we love the quality of life people here enjoy, and we want to help make it better.” That commitment coupled with Fiber’s new affordability has fueled PocketiNet’s desire to provide state-of-the-art Fiber to local homes.

When Zach reached out to PocketiNet they invited him to their Gigabit Country Experience Center to meet with Wrandoll and several other staff members. The topic of conversation was how best to rally his neighborhood so it can be one of the next to get Fiber Internet. Zach left with brochures, door hangers, and various other promotional materials to share with his neighbors. Zach isn’t normally the type of guy who goes around knocking on doors to introduce himself. It was a bit out of his comfort zone. Once Zach began going door to door he said, “I was most comfortable hanging door hangers, but doing so sparked conversations with some of the homeowners in the neighborhood.”

For folks who aren’t sure they need Fiber, Zach reminds us that times are changing quickly and technology is advancing rapidly. He says, “We used to think phones were just for calling people!” Now we have smart phones which are basically mini-computers in our pockets.

Are Zach’s efforts paying off? You bet. His neighborhood is nearly 30% of the way to meeting the construction goal. Perhaps you’re reading this and thinking you’d love Fiber to your home but you’re not about to knock on your neighbors’ doors to extol them on the virtues of Fiber. You can still make a difference. Sign up at PocketiNet.CrowdFiber.com. As part of that process, you can anonymously send Gigabit Country postcards to your neighbors encouraging them to sign up as well. Lastly, if you’re interested, PocketiNet would be happy to put a Gigabit Country yard sign in your yard.

Zach worries he may be pushing Gigabit Country too much with his neighbors. They won’t think him pushy once they experience Fiber. After all, it increases home values by 3-5%, on average. It’s virtually future proof. As our homes, cars, and personal devices vie for bandwidth, Fiber consistently delivers. Imagine streaming 4K UHD movies to your TV with nearly zero waiting, zero pixilation, zero buffering, and it’s never impacted by the weather. PocketiNet’s Gigabit Country services offer up to 1000Mbps Internet speeds with managed Wi-Fi, digital home automation, security, home phone, video surveillance, video streaming systems, and DIRECTV for folks who want a traditional TV experience.

Want to try it out for yourself? Visit PocketiNet’s Gigabit Country Experience Center upstairs at the Walla Walla Regional Airport or in their Tri-Cities office at 6503 W. Okanogan Avenue, Suite G (after Nov 1st). Zach did. His response: “It was really neat to see it all working.”

When Zach was asked why he wanted Fiber to his home he said, “I want to be prepared for the future of the Internet.” I say to Zach, “Good for you Zach.” I say to you, “Be like Zach.”

Magnet provides free Wi-Fi for Galway Food Festival

This Is Galway

Like to tweet and eat, Google on-the-go or even snap a ‘sambo selfie’? Galway’s Food Festival is ripe with connectivity as Magnet provide free wi-fi for all festival visitors this Easter weekend.

This is a first for the Galway Food Festival but since Magnet have been providing Wi-Fi for major events including the X-Factor auditions, NFL tailgate parties and rugby matches at Wembley stadium through our subsidiary Velocity1 they’re good hands.

The Galway Food Festival, now in its fifth year, runs over five days this Easter weekend from Thursday, 24th until Monday, 28th March. Attracting more than 70,000 visitors last year, the festival celebrates Galway as a good food destination with a strong focus on artisan, seasonal and local produce.

The complimentary Wi-Fi from Magnet Networks will be available in the Festival Village located at The Spanish Arch. Festival goers just need to select “food_festival” from the available wireless networks on their device and follow the on-screen instructions to connect. Liam Hanrahan of Galway City Council was delighted with the technology being made available to users Easter weekend: “Galway City Council is happy to have been able to facilitate the public wifi at the Food Festival & the work with Magnet to date. This will be of huge benefit to the festival scene in Galway & will also be supporting the Galway2020 bid.”

Speaking of the announcement Phil Clapperton, who heads up Magnet’s Galway operation, said: “The Galway Food Festival is a great annual showcase of Galway’s vibrant and creative food community and culture. Magnet is delighted to be providing free Wi-Fi for the festival. We expect visitors to be using it to ‘check-in’ online, share photos on social media and navigate the online festival programme.”

Magnet recently rolled out a new Wi-Fi solution that gives additional services including managed hardware, security gateway and guest login email capture.

In January this year the company opened new offices in Galway, as it set up its West of Ireland hub to provide local account management to companies in the region availing of Magnet’s full suite of telecoms solutions.
